Democratic Candidates for the 2004 Primaries (last updated September 16, 2003) (back to top)

Who will be the Democratic Party's candidate against George W. Bush for the presidency in 2004? Ten candidates were running as of mid-September 2003 to become the Democratic Party's nominee, a decision that will be determined through primaries conducted in various states and culminating with the party's convention in Boston in the summer of 2004.

For months, the slate of candidates included four current U.S. senators, two current members of the House of Representatives, one former U.S. senator, one former governor, and one political activist. In mid-September, retired General Wesley Clark confirmed reports that he would run, potentially changing the landscape.

Vice-President Al Gore, who lost a narrow election in 2000 to Bush, considered running again for the 2004 nomination but announced in December 2002 that he would not do so.

Democratic Candidates' Fund-Raising (last updated July 27, 2003) (back to top)

For better or worse, fund-raising provides some indication as to the strength and support behind a given candidate. Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) raised the most of the nine current Democratic candidates in the first half of 2003, reporting $12.9 million in receipts to the Federal Election Commission, with Senator John Edwards (D-N.C.) close behind with a total of $11.92 million over the same period.

However, former Vermont Governor Howard Dean has gained considerably on his rivals, raising the most of any Democratic candidate in the second quarter of 2002, pulling in $7.6 million.
