Mirror Law (TM) Exploring how popular culture depicts the legal system. More info here.

 Movies
  • Chicago New! (the women who inspired the story, how courts deal with pre-trial publicity, female murderers)

  • Legally Blonde (Could Elle Woods actually be lead counsel for her client?)
  • Star Wars : Episode II (How far has cloning come in real-life? Could Anakin be a war criminal?)
  • Traffic (Why is killing a witness so effective? Who is the real-life drug czar?)
  • The Hurricane (How did Rubin Carter actually win his freedom? What is this about exhaustion of state remedies? What is a writ of habeas corpus?)
 Television
 Other
  • Inherit the Wind (how accurately does this play depict the Scopes monkey trial?)

Could that really happen? Is that based on a real case?

Two questions that every lawyer or law student is all too familiar with.

Law is everywhere in modern American pop culture. It may not come as a surprise, but TV and the movies don't always get things right, and this unfortunately leaves a lot of people confused about how the law actually works in real life.

Thus, this site.

By looking at the real-life law behind pop-culture through a combination of legal analysis and journalistic research, I want to help you understand how our legal system actually works. Hopefully, you'll even find this a new way to appreciate both your favorite shows and the law itself.

Please e-mail me questions that I should answer; there are too many legal television shows for me to track all of them, but I want to address your concerns.

By the way, I'm not the first person to try this, though I may be the first to do so with a journalistic intent. For older movie examples, see Reel Justice, by Michael Asimow and Paul Bergman. For an academic look at fictional TV lawyers, see Prime Time Law, edited by Robert Jarvis and Paul Joseph.
