What is this site?

This site is the home of FootnoteTV, the news site that I created more than four years ago and that I still write, edit and run entirely by myself, in my spare time, and for free. This page is the introduction page for new visitors, though regular visitors probably will want to go directly to the blog/calendar page, which is on-line here.

FootnoteTV began more or less on Christmas Day 2000 with a conversation with my younger siblings. I realized then that they had not seen the first presidential debate between Al Gore and George W. Bush but knew, months later, the Saturday Night Live sketch that parodied it.

Someone, I said, should do something with that. Rather than just bemoaning the state of young people's knowledge of current events, someone should take advantage of what they are already watching and talking about and bring the news to them.

I decided that I would give it a try. I had been a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and an editorial writer for the Detroit Free Press, and though I was about to start a new job as a lawyer, I still wanted to continue as a journalist in some way and thought this could be my way to contribute. I spent a year developing the site in my spare time, which entailed a lot of research and work. And then I launched in February 2002, first covering just The West Wing and Saturday Night Live and quickly expanding to cover many more shows.

The site has received some critical acclaim over the years.

  • Yahoo! said that my "intelligent and lucid footnotes elevate TV from mere boob tube to a source of thoughtful discussion."
  • A New York Times columnist called my articles "smart and scrupulously sourced."
  • Whitney Matheson of USAToday.com thought that the site could be "the next online phenomenon," which may have been a little optimistic.
It's even been mentioned on the Today show and the New York Law Journal.

About Me

My name is Stephen Lee, and I write, edit, design and publish FootnoteTV entirely by myself, in my spare time, and for free. I used to be a metro reporter for the Chicago Tribune and am now a lawyer at the New York firm of Debevoise & Plimpton. I live in New York City with my wife, a violinist whose schedule plays a big part in making this site possible. I obviously watch (or at least monitor) a lot of TV (we love Tivo); my favorite dramas currently are The West Wing, Lost and Battlestar Galactica. I also read a staggering, staggering number of comic books.
