Updates/Blog

October 19, 2004

I'm going to be out of town on business for a few days but hope to continue updating the site while away.

I also am putting on-line some articles and resources examining the record and plans of President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry regarding specific issues. First up is a look at their records in 2002 and 2003 regarding Iraq; Republicans have criticized Kerry for having inconsistent positions on Iraq, which Kerry has denied. See for yourself by reading three major speeches by Kerry in 2002 and 2003 on Iraq:

  1. why he voted in October 2002 to authorize military force,
  2. his argument for an ultimately unsuccessful amendment to Bush's $87 billion request, and
  3. why he voted in October 2003 against the final version of the $87 billion request.

I've also put together an article examining the context for such actions here.

I hope to put up more articles and resources like these on-line in the next two weeks as Election Day approaches. Please let me know by email if there are any topics you would like addressed or clarified, and I'll see what I can do.

I've added some footnotes for the new scene about Arab-American comedians on the Fahrenheit 9/11 DVD. I've also revised and expanded my discussion of the media calls on Election Night 2000 in response to some questions about how events proceeded that night.

I've expanded the page on the coalition of the willing to list and categorize all the countries mentioned in the Senate concurrent resolution of March 27, 2003, which seems to have been the basis for the countries that Moore named in Fahrenheit 9/11.

Thanks to Eric Alterman for the link today at Altercation. I've also heard that the site got mentioned on a local Denver TV station.

I'm unfortunately having some problems with uploading the PDF version of this site, maybe due to the size of the file. I'll hopefully have it up soon.

I've updated the piece on Iraq after "major combat operations" to reflect former Ambassador Paul Bremer's recent comments. I've also corrected a typo in my discussion about the 2000 election; as a reader pointed out, the figures cited for the overvote distribution did not match the text because I accidentally added an additional digit.

Columbia professor Sree Sreenivasan, who has written about FootnoteTV before, wrote a very nice article about this site for Poynter.org, on-line here. Check it out.

I've added a sidebar piece on why Donald Rumsfeld met with Saddam Hussein in 1983, which the movie referenced as it speculated as to what was going on in George W. Bush's mind on September 11. I probably will have another sidebar or two up soon. I've also begun making a few changes here and there to make the site look and read a bit better. For example, I've done some revisions to the map of the coalition of the willing to eliminate some distracting text.

I will use this page for updates (including any corrections). I am launching Footnote Fahrenheit for the public on Monday, October 4, 2004. I will be adding a PDF version of the material on this site for printing as a book for easy reference in the next few days; this will be available for free on the site and I may be able to give out some free hard copies once I run the numbers and see how much it will cost me to do so.
