About this site (last updated October 4, 2004)
Footnote Fahrenheit is an independent, non-partisan guide to the issues and questions in Michael Moore's movie Fahrenheit 9/11. It is not a pro-Michael Moore site and it is not an anti-Michael Moore site, though some may view parts in such a light. It is simply something to help people who walked out of the movie with questions about what they saw. It also should be useful for anyone who wants to know more about what the movie has to say before or instead of seeing it.
I've treated Fahrenheit 9/11 as the starting point of many, many discussions, rather than just the one piece of evidence in a discussion about what kind of people Michael Moore and George W. Bush are. It's taken a lot longer than I expected to do this work, but the issues are complicated and should be treated seriously. I've learned a lot doing this and I believe you will find it useful as well. Please email me about what you think. I also hope that you tell other people about this work: tell them to go to www.footnotefahrenheit.com.
By the way, I am not affiliated with Michael Moore, George W. Bush, or any ongoing political campaign. I am not a registered member of any political party and have given no money to any current political candidate.
Again, if you like what you see on Footnote Fahrenheit, you might also like FootnoteTV, which has been mentioned in the New York Times, the New York Law Journal, and USA Today.com, and on the Today show.
As for who I am, I'm a journalist and lawyer in New York City. I used to be a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and the Dallas Morning News, and I've written editorials for the Detroit Free Press. I am now a lawyer at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, the New York law firm, where I am a mid-level litigation associate and work on general commercial matters and investigations. I am a graduate of Phillips Academy, Yale College, and Columbia Law School. I live in New York City with my wife, Helen Kim, a violinist.
I came up with the idea for FootnoteTV on Christmas Day 2000 when I overheard my younger siblings talking about Saturday Night Live's depiction of the first debate between Al Gore and George W. Bush; I asked them if they knew what the "lockbox" joke referred to and then mused out loud that someone should try helping younger people understand the context for such jokes better. I spent the next year developing FootnoteTV and launched it in February 2002. The site has grown over time, both in terms of audience and scope: I started off covering just the West Wing and Saturday Night Live, and now cover many more shows on a regular basis.
I write, edit, and design FootnoteTV entirely by myself and in my spare time, and did Footnote Fahrenheit the same way. I do FootnoteTV and Footnote Fahrenheit entirely for free; I have made no money doing this work.
